The
story of my Little Button Quilt
Because mum, my 3 sisters and I lived so far
apart from each other I came up with the idea of the little button
quilt, to keep us ever closer in our hearts.
The idea was that we would all have exactly
the same little quilt, but each of us would ‘grow’ our quilt with
novelty buttons. Every time
we get together we would compare our quilts and tell the stories, if
any, of our new buttons, and see how different all our quilts were
becoming.
As you sew each button on, perhaps you also stitch a memory.
Was the button a gift? From whom?
Where did you buy it? Was that one chosen by your daughter or grandson,
perhaps? Or was this one found in that little shop you stopped into,
while travelling?
Children also love to see it grow and will often comment and ask
questions. They love to hear any stories that may attach to a particular
button and also to help you choose which one to buy next time you go
shopping!
Sadly our mum passed away early 2003, but her young grand daughter who
continues the tradition took up her little button quilt.
Our original little button quilts were appliquéd. When I decided to
re-vamp the idea for you to share, I thought that appliqué fabrics did
tend to ‘swallow’ some of the buttons, and so it’s now an
‘outline’ stitchery, which shows off the buttons better.
We all still ‘grow’ our original buttons quilts, and it will always
have a special place in my heart, but I love the new stitchery one, and
I hope you will try it for yourself and your family and friends.
Country button blessings,
Stella
